Top 10 Gadgets of 2009

While some of these gadgets certainly were not released in 2009, they still, without a doubt, ruled 2009. Here are my picks, in no particular order, for the top ten gadgets of 2009:

1. Apple iPhone

As much as I hate the Apple corporation and all of its products, I will admit that the iPhone may very well be THE gadget of 2009. With brilliant advertising strategies and innovative partnerships, the Apple iPhone has created a revolution in the smartphone industry. The term “There’s an app for that” was coined, spearheading the birth of literally thousands of apps for just about anything.

2. Netbooks

Although I am not going to highlight any specific models, I will give a tip of my hat to the netbook industry that has seemed to boom this year. Netbooks have revolutionized the concept of “portable notebooks,” and have opened new doors for students, business associates, and everyday users. Literally being able to fit in a purse or backpack with ease, the netbook has allowed for computer portability like never before.

3. Nintendo Wii

Yes, Nintendo released the Wii back in 2006, but that hasn’t stopped it from taking over 2009. With innovative new games like Wii Sports Resort and Wii Fit, Nintendo has managed to partially debunk the correlation between video games and childhood obesity. Kids and adults alike are raving about the Wii and this hype will surely continue into next year.

4. Nintendo DSi

Another nod to the Nintendo corporation for the release of the DSi. As a successor to the largely popular Nintendo DS, the DSi sports a smaller build with new features, including a built in camera. The DSi is yet another product that is attributed to Nintendo’s constant mission to stand out from the crowd.

5. Amazon Kindle

Face it. Everything is going digital nowadays, including books. Amazon recently released the newest version of it’s Kindle. The Kindle is a digital reader that now boasts 3G connectivity and extended battery life. Although books will surely be around for a little longer, this is the start to a new revolution in reading.

6. GPS

Maps are going out of style. GPS systems have been popping up now for the past couple years, but this year saw new, streamlined improvements to the older models. GPS systems are now smarter than ever and many allow for wi-fi connectivity and auto-updates to road, traffic, and weather conditions.

7. Windows 7

Okay, I know this doesn’t technically qualify as a “gadget,” but I figure that I’d include it on this list anyways. With the sorrows that Windows Vista brought along with its release, Microsoft quickly regrouped and released Windows 7 on October 22nd. So far, reviews have been positive, and many have been raving about the speed and streamlined design of the new operating system.

8. Sony VAIO X Series

Along with the release of Windows 7, Sony released its new line of laptops, including the Sony VAIO X Series. Weighing only 1.6 lbs and having a thickness of only .55 inches, the VAIO X turned a lot of heads. Sony claims that this razor-like notebook is the thinnest laptop in the world.

9. Samsung Dual View TL220

This is one of those things where you think to yourself, “Wow… Why hasn’t anyone thought of this before?” The Samsung TL220 is the first ever camera to feature an LCD screen on both the front and the back, opening up new possibilities. Got a fussy kid? No problem; just pop a clown on the front screen. Can’t see where you’re shooting for those “Facebook” photos? No problem either. Simple and clean, and it’s just emerging now.

10. Playstation 3 Slim

Sony had a rough time when it released its Playstation 3 a couple years back. Many complained that it was slow and bulky. Recently however, Sony answered those complaints with the release of the PS3 slim. Now at about an inch and a half thinner, the PS3 slim is causing sales to look a little more in Sony’s favor and allowing gamers to experience the excellence of games for the PS3 console.
