Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) is aiming high for its upcoming Windows Phone 7 operating system, as the software giant predicts it will sell at least 30 million devices with the OS by the end of 2011.
During its ReMix conference, the company laid out its lofty ambitions for its upcoming smartphone OS. It expects 40% of the phone sold next year will be smartphones and it is hoping to grab a large percentage of that. For comparison’s sake, Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) has sold a little more than 50 million iPhone since the introduction of its first smartphone.
Why is Microsoft so bullish on its mobile software? Well, it kind of is impressive. The company radically revamped the platform and ditched compatibility with the tens of millions of Windows Mobile devices in order to produce a new OS with a new user interface.

The solution will be available from ACCESS worldwide as of June 2010.
NetFront IP-Phone, which supports air interfaces for 3G and wireless LAN (Wi-Fi) connections and major global standards, provides a standard middleware application as well as an implementation solution service. NetFront IP-Phone is able to communicate with a variety of IP telephony servers, making it possible for ISPs and MVNOs to offer high-quality VoIP services to smartphone users while substantially reducing development time and costs.

Look, the N900 might be sitting at the top of Nokia’s handset pyramid in terms of capabilities, but as we’ve said all along, the N900 is not a mass-market device. Nokia’s been very clear that the N900 was launched as a means to strengthen its Maemo development community (on the path to MeeGo we now know). And by all accounts, it’s done just that while winning a rabid fanbase of nerds in the process. Nevertheless, Reuters  uses Gartner’s estimate of less than 100,000 units sold in the device’s first five months as proof that Nokia can’t mount a challenge to RIM and Apple.
